LA_MARIA o la espeluznante seducción de una cancion de amor
Raissa Avilés takes texts and melodies from love songs, Mexican folklore and other genres as the basis for her performance. She deconstructs them based on culturally influenced ideas that are inherent in such songs. It is a pleasurable game between attraction and rejection, fantasy and reality, between culturally imposed roles and rebellion against them. The uncanny seduction of a love song mentioned in the title!
Raissa Avilés, a Swiss singer, performer and author with Mexican roots, pays particular attention to scenic forms that explore the relationship between music, voice and movement.
«LA_MARIA» is part of the Bring a Friend format. In 2022, we launched an attempt to question and soften our role as gatekeepers in the curating process. We asked three of our invited companies to nominate artists from their own local context for our programme, who have not yet toured much internationally. Raissa Avilés was invited by Camilla Parini, who is je suisse (or not) at aua this year.
Easy Read
The piece is a concert. In it, Raissa deals with love songs, among other things. In doing so, she skilfully plays with our expectations that these love songs trigger in us.
